About General Sense
In 2025, General Sense quietly built the world's first real-time detection of the chemical world from neural activity using this very specific brain signal. We’re making a Nose-Computer Interface (NCI) that reads a dog's sense of smell in real time and turns it into machine-readable intelligence. We implant surface electrodes on the olfactory bulb of dogs, decode what they smell at the neural level, and classify it with AI faster than the dog can even react. No behavioral training. No handler interpretation. Just raw chemical data streaming off a biological sensor that evolution spent 50 million years perfecting. We’re finalizing some research questions in rat models before implanting our first dog in October.
The founding team built the underlying science from a DARPA-funded lab at NYU. We are building the chemical lobe for Artificial General Intelligence (AGI), and we are the only company on Earth collecting this data at this massive scale.
Who you are
You're not looking for a line on your resume. You're looking for the summer where you actually did something that mattered. You want to work alongside PhDs who've published in Nature and Science, not sit in a cubicle tagging training data or autoclaving the dishes. You want to go home in August knowing you pushed real technology forward with your own hands.
We have deadlines. We have demos. We have contracts that depend on what we ship this summer. Some weeks will be intense. If that excites you more than it scares you, you're our kind of person.
We have 3 different openings
- ML Intern: Drive the future of our core NCI technology by performing focused scientific investigations on messy neural recording data and translating quantitative findings into concrete engineering improvements. Your work will fundamentally improve our dataset integrity and ML decoding performance.
- Animal Experimental Intern: Take ownership of the in-vivo experimental pipeline, from behavioral training of rat models to acquiring high-quality neural recording data. You will troubleshoot complex electrophysiology failure modes and design new protocols that feed directly into the ML team’s decoding experiments.
- Electrical Engineering / Hardware Engineering Intern: Work on mission-critical embedded hardware (STM32, nRF52, FPGA), transforming fragile prototypes into reliable, full-stack systems with real-world deadlines. This demanding role requires fast learning, deep debugging skills under pressure, and clear technical communication in Russian or Ukrainian.
